Automated Tape Punch Machine
A complete electromechanical tape punch system — CAD-designed punch-die mechanics, stepper-driven feed, and a hardwired PLC controller for automated hole patterns used in precise rivet insertion.
Overview
As an undergraduate research assistant at Ryerson University, I designed and assembled a mechanical system for tape punching. The machine creates a pattern of holes specially designed for accurate rivet insertion. A gear system driven by a stepper motor feeds the tape, and a guiding and positioning system keeps the tape precise relative to the punch-die. The system was fine-tuned and successfully tested. Alongside the mechanics, I designed, hardwired, and tested a controller for full automation using a PLC, stepper driver, and proximity sensors for tape and punch position feedback.

A programmable logic controller was coded to run the automated punching sequence. A stepper motor driver controls tape feed; proximity sensors provide feedback. Power supply, relays, and hardwired schematics complete the industrial-style control box.
